Dr. Stephen P. Long

Dr. Stephen P. Long is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Randolph-Macon College and Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Medicine where he also completed two years of surgical residency followed by an anesthesiology residency at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals. He subsequently completed specialty training and board certification in Pain Medicine and remained on faculty as co-director of the VCU Pain Management Center from 1991 until 1998. He is an Associate Clinical Professor of anesthesiology at VCU where he still actively teaches 2nd and 4th-year medical students.

Most recently, Dr. Long has served on the boards of the VCU Health System and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Long has lectured extensively throughout the world on topics pertaining to acute, chronic and cancer pain as well as legal and regulatory issues involving pain management. Additionally, Dr. Long has multiple publications concerning areas of pain management.

Dr. Long is involved in pain medicine so that he can give his patients an opportunity to get their life back. He is passionate, conservative, and very caring about his patients and their families. As a pioneer in private pain in Virginia, he aims to provide a warm, caring, safe and state-of-the-art environment to treat pain. He takes great pride in being friendly, courteous and always available to listen and treat his patients who suffer from acute and chronic pain.

Dr. Stephen P. Long’s training and experience have enabled him to provide accurate medical diagnoses and treatments for his patients. For this, he has received numerous accolades, including being named one of the top Pain Medicine Physicians in Richmond Magazine’s annual “Top-Doc” issue every year since 2000, as well as Who’s Who in Health Care and the Consumer Research Council of America to Top Physicians Award. He is an examiner of the American Board of Anesthesiology in Pain Medicine and holds dual board certifications in Anesthesiology and Pain Management from The American Board of Anesthesiology.

Outside of the office, Dr. Long enjoys golfing and skiing. He loves living in Richmond because the people, history and events are fantastic! In addition, the proximity to Washington and the State Capitol allows him to be engaged politically to educate and lobby elected officials in matters pertaining to health care.

Dr. Long has received Richmond Magazine Top Doc honor from 2005-2017 and again in 2019, 2021 and 2022! Dr. Long is also the winner of Our Health Richmond’s Best Pain Management Bedside Manner Award for December 2016. He is also honored to receive the Castle Connolly Top Doctor award for 2017, 2020 and 2021. Additionally, he has been awarded the Top Pain Doc 2020 and 2021 by Virginia Magazine and is in the top 5% of America’s Most Honored Doctors for 2020. He has also been voted a Virginia Top Doctor is 2022 and 2023. Congratulations, Dr. Long!
